Kickboxing
History of the International Amateur Kickboxing Sport Association Kickboxing as an up to date and modern contact combat sport has its origins in Eastern Asian combat arts, especially in karate, Tea Kwon Do and Kung Fu as well as in boxing and savate. The first sport competitions with real contact that had become possible due to newly developed protective gear took place in the USA in 1974 under the title "All Style Contact Karate". As a consequence of this rapidly advancing new sport several associations arose whereby each of them had different political aims in sport, however it were often commercial aspects that were placed in the foreground.
In 1987 the International Amateur Kickboxing Sport Association - IAKSA - was created by responsible officials. The aims of the new association are to organise amateur kickboxing internationally, the aknowledgement of its member associations by national sports authorities, the aknowledgement of the IAKSA by the GAISF (General Association of International Sports Federations) and subsequently by the IOC (International Olympic Comitee).
The IAKSA guarantees its member associations a high standard keeping obligatory principles:
IAKSA only accepts one member association for each nation whom it guarantees full loyalty
IAKSA is a democratic association with equal rights and duties for its members. Membership is based on mutual friendship, respect, and tolerance.
Regular world championships are organised by the world association.
The world association guarantees a comprehensive training and evaluation for referees.
The constitutional general meeting took place in Copenhagen/Denmark from 4th to 6th March.
Since its foundation the IAKSA has successfully organised 6 European championships (1988 Karlsruhe/Germany, 1990 Birmingham/Great Britain, 1992 Hamburg/Germany, 1992 Rimini/Italy, 1996 Graz/Austria, 1998 Istanbul/Turkey) and 9 world championships (1989 Graz/Austria, 1991 Berlin/Germany, 1993 Odense/Denmark, 1995 Hull/Canada, 1997 Birmingham/Great Britain, 1999 Madrid/Spain, 2000 Dublin/Ireland, 2001 Klagenfurt/Austria, 2002 Caorle/Italy).
